Job Description:

Under direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Fair Futures, the Education Specialist will work with youth to provide educational advocacy, monitor academic performance, aid in the high school selection process, and assist in referrals for tutoring or extracurricular activities. The Education Specialist will serve as a liaison between the youth's support team within the agency and the youth's teachers or school administration. Additionally, the Educational Specialist works in conjunction with the youth's assigned Fair Futures Coach to assist with college/other post-secondary goals. This may include creating college roadmaps, completing post-secondary applications, organizing campus tours and assisting with financial aid applications and enrollment. While working collaboratively with agency staff and external parties, the staff member will maintain professionalism and confidentiality in all areas as it pertains to youth.

HOURS PER WEEK: Non-Exempt

  • Regular hours entail 9:00am - 5:00pm, Monday - Friday
  • Must be flexible

FUNCTIONS:

  • Monitor and track all youth school records including report cards, IEPs, suspensions, disciplinary notices, etc
  • Enroll all youth in public school and ensure all enrollment requirements are completed
  • Ensure all involved departments and individuals are informed of changes in progress and any and all additional changes that may occur
  • Receive and coordinate all communications with schools and representatives
  • Assist youth with Post-Secondary plans including, but not limited to, college, vocational training programs, military, or work placement

Experience and Skills:

  • MSW or equivalent human services degree preferred in education, guidance or related field required
  • Two years of documented relevant experience required
  • Highly skilled in Microsoft Office
  • Experience with NYC public school system highly preferred
  • Knowledgeable of the college application process and post-Secondary resources for youth
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills and ability to work in a flexible team environment
  • Ability to work well with people from many cultures including recent immigrants, non-English speakers, and LGBTQ youth
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License preferred
  • Ability to travel to all agency locations

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Word processing: Including responding to e-mails, composing letters, completing computerized documentation, transcribing minutes for meetings, etc.: This involves sitting at a computer for several hours a day
  • Completing paperwork - Such as copying and stapling
  • Stand for several hours to meet tutoring needs
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Sit/ride in vehicles, busses, subways, trains, plains - public transportation for lengthy periods of time
  • Walk up/down stairs
  • Walk to enter/exit subway and other public transportation
  • Walk several blocks to get to required location
