Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Behavioral Support, the Behavioral Support Specialist executes the approved program to assist youth in identifying and acquiring the skills needed to establish and achieve personal goals. This staff member will maintain professionalism in all areas, including confidentiality.


Regular hours entail 9:00am - 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. Must be able to flex schedule to meet program needs. Weekend and evening hours required


  • Provide skills training and life skills coaching to delinquent and conduct-disordered youth
  • Provide activities to match the child’s needs, as specified by treatment plan
  • Provide skills training to each program youth may include behavior management skills, communication skills, coping skills, problem solving, or study skills
  • Document each skills training session on the appropriate forms and turn them into the program staff in a timely fashion each week
  • Report emergencies such as runaways, accidents, or medical problems
  • Provide hourly respite as designated by manager

Experience and Skills:

  • Associate’s degree strongly preferred
  • Minimum high school degree with five (5) years of experience working with children and families required
  • Bilingual preferred
  • NYC ACS or private agency child welfare experience required
  • Familiarity with OCFS, OMRDD, OMH, and other relevant municipal and state agencies
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook applications
  • Ability and willingness to engage and work with families in an 'in-home' context
  • Ability to adapt and individualize program interventions to utilize family strengths and skills
  • Flexibility to work when the families are available to meet
  • Ability to work well with people from many cultures including recent immigrants, non-English speakers, and LGBTQ children
  • Willingness to travel within the 5 boroughs of New York City
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License required


  • Word processing: Including responding to e-mails, composing letters, completing computerized documentation, transcribing minutes for meetings, involves sitting at a computer for several hours a day
  • Completing paperwork -Such as copying, stapling as needed
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Sit/ride in vehicles, busses, subways, trains - public transportation for lengthy periods of time
  • Walk up/down stairs as needed
  • Walk to enter/exit subway and other public transportation as needed
  • Walk several blocks to get to required location
