Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Manager of the Learning Center, Skills Trainers work to support unaccompanied children with progressive academic services, including Social Emotional Learning, acculturation, recreation, and the development of independent living skills. Skill Trainers guide children in our program to become global citizens and agents of positive change in their communities.

HOURS PER WEEK:   Non-Exempt. 

  • Regular work hours can fall between 7:00am-6:30pm, Monday-Friday; all full-time employees must complete 40 hours per week on a consistent schedule

  • Must be flexible to meet program needs

 

FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintain a safe, positive classroom environment consistent with Cayuga Centers internal policy and protocol

  • Provide trauma-informed, culturally responsive care, including Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and individualized support services

  • Research, plan, organize and execute daily lesson plans on topics of acculturation, physical education, recreation, and independent living skills. 

  • Co-facilitate weekly Group Therapy sessions with the Clinical department

  • Contribute to curriculum development, special support services, field trip planning, community outreach, and other Learning Center team projects

  • Complete weekly progress reports for each child in care

  • Facilitate daily afternoon dismissals

  • Collaborate with Teachers, Teacher Aide, Clinicians, Case Managers, and other staff in order to ensure quality care that is tailored to each child’s individual needs

  • Actively participate and/or complete all professional development requirements, including trainings, readings, and pertinent certifications

  • Responsible for complying with rules and regulations governing access to Protected Health Information under HIPAA.  Access to Protected Health Information is limited to the extent required to perform responsibilities effectively and efficiently.  No access will be permitted unnecessarily. These essential job functions dictate the level of access, use, and disclosure of confidential information

    • Perform other duties as requested by your immediate supervisor or the Chief Executive Officer

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Stand for several hours to conduct daily acculturated lessons

  • Engage in physically energetic activities

  • Complete required deskwork

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds

  • Sit and ride in vehicles and public transportation for lengthy periods of time

  • Walk up/down stairs as needed

  • Walk to enter/exit by the subway and other public transportation as needed

  • Walk several blocks to get to required location

 

Experience and Skills:

  • High School Diploma/GED required, Associate's degree preferred

  • Fluency in both English and Spanish required; All agency documentation is required in English, while most classroom instruction is in Spanish

  • Classroom experience required, background in Special Education or ENL strongly preferred

  • Physical Education and Recreational experience, strongly preferred

  • Portrays cultural competence and appreciates diversity; experience working with immigrant, LGBTQIA, and non-English speaking populations

  • Knowledge in modern classroom technologies, including computers, tablets, and smartboards

  • Experience in classroom management, student engagement strategies, and classroom intervention strategies for students who have experienced trauma

  • Strong communication and organizational skills

  • Ability to handle confidential material in a responsible manner

  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to change

  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively in a team context

  • Demonstrates empathy and high moral character; strong alignment to Cayuga Centers mission, values, and competencies

  • Passion and commitment to teaching, working with children, and serving immigrant and refugee children

  • Valid NYS Driver’s License preferred
