Job Description:

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:To provide supervision and guidance to Skills Trainers within the ACS Program. The Assistant Director of Skills Training will assist in the coordination of skills training activities and overall skills training either one-on one or in group settings foster children.


  • Establish a strong relationship with a child or adolescent that combines warmth and humor with effective skills.
  • Provide skill-building training to assist a child in acquisition of new skills.
  • Work cooperatively with program staff to implement child’s program; accept supervision well; be readily available for consultation; attend meetings; complete assigned paperwork.
  • Assist Skills Trainers in creating curriculum for life skills and skill building tasks for each foster child; including proof reading and editing.
  • Assist with travel and travel coordination for foster children and parents.
  • Create and modify schedules for Skills Trainers including educational field trips, doctors’ appointments, hospital visits, discharge/reunification, pick-up/drop-off to and from Cayuga Centers sites.
  • Provide supervision to Skills Trainers.
  • Monitor and supervise skill building sessions, skills training logs, and records.
  • Conduct professional development training for Skills Trainers.
  • Coordinate and schedule chaperon services for foster children.
  • Ensure class and trip attendance accuracy and procedures.
  • Coordinate Know Your Rights presentation for incoming foster children.
  • Develop and schedule lessons for educational and recreational field trips for foster children.
  • Monitor storage rooms- including maintaining inventory of food, clothing, hygiene kits, and other materials.
  • Assist in the initial intake process for all foster children including conducting orientation.
  • Conduct safety procedures for emergency evacuation drills, driving safety, and use of First Aid kits.
  • Ensure each Skills Trainer is equipped with the proper skills training materials.
    • Attend required training.
    • Read required books.
  • Responsible for complying with rules and regulations governing access to Protected Health Information under HIPAA. Access to Protected Health Information is limited to the extent required to perform responsibilities effectively and efficiently. No access will be permitted unnecessarily. These essential job functions dictate the level of access, use, and disclosure of confidential information.
  • Ability to work well with people from many cultures including recent immigrants, non-English speakers, and LGBTQ children.
  • Perform other duties as requested by your immediate supervisor or the Chief Executive Officer.

Experience and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a mental health-related field from an accredited college required
  • Familiarity with ACS, OCFS, OMRDD, OMH and other relevant municipal and state agencies preferred
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook applications
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills and ability to work in a flexible team context.
  • Ability to work well with people from many cultures including recent immigrants, non-English speakers, and LGBTQ children.
  • Ability to implement a skills training program.
  • Demonstrate conceptual understanding of developmentally appropriate behavior for children/adolescents in the home, school, and community.
  • Ability to handle confidential material in a responsible manner.
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License preferred.
  • Ability to travel to other agency locations as required.


  • Regular hours entail 9:00am - 5:00pm, Monday - Friday. Must be flexible to meet program needs. Evenings and weekends may be required
